EAST RUTHERFORD - A worker was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center today after the floor collapsed under the forklift he was operating in East Rutherford.

Police say the incident happened inside a warehouse belonging to AM Express Freight on Maple Street. The 8-foot sinkhole reportedly opened up just after 12:30 p.m.

Authorities are calling it a freak accident. Building inspectors have been called to examine the integrity of the rest of the business. Owners are waiting for approval to move merchandise out of the warehouse.

The worker was able to climb out of the hole on his own and is being treated for a back injury.
