WASHINGTON - Gov. Chris Christie will no longer be heading up President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team. Vice President-elect Mike Pence will take over the role.

Trump apparently wanted Pence to take over due to Pence’s Washington experience and contacts.

Christie had been serving as head of the transition team for the last several months.

Gov. Christie put out a statement following the announcement that said, “I am proud to have run the pre-election phase of the transition team along with a thoroughly professional and dedicated team of people... As we now enter the post-election phase, I look forward to working with Vice-President Elect Pence and the rest of the leadership team to implement that template as we prepare for January 20, 2017.”

The governor also thanked the president-elected for the opportunity to continue to help lead the next phase.

Christie, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and campaign supporter Michael Flynn, a retired lieutenant general, will now serve as vice chairs of the transition team.

It was not immediately known if the Bridge-Gate scandal surrounding Gov. Christie had anything to do with the shakeup. Christie is scheduled to face a judge later this month to answer to a citizen's complaint that he failed to put a stop to the closure of lanes leading up to the George Washington Bridge in 2013.
