Voters to decide on property tax increase

BRICK TOWNSHIP - Some voters in New Jersey will soon decide whether or not to raise property taxes higher than the 2-percent tax cap.

Several towns and school districts have placed the question on the ballot in an upcoming referendum. If the bill fails, there will no longer be curbside garbage, recycling or leaf pick up in Brick Township. Mayor Stephen Acropolis says 172 municipal employees, including 23 cops, will also be let go.

If the referendum passes, the average homeowner would pay $441 more per year. Without it, taxes would still go up, but at a less significant increase.

The mayor says he'd like to mandate a furlough to keep some of the jobs, but in Brick Township, which is a civil service community, he says it's just not an option.
