WEST ORANGE - Dozens of volunteers gathered today in West Orange to pack toiletries, books and other items for troops in Afghanistan.

The event, which put together about 100 care packages for soldiers overseas, was led by West Orange Cares. Members of the organization estimate they've sent about 1,000 care packages with essential items to troops recently.

The packages contained items donated by local community members, like shampoo, candy and games. They will be mailed out this week.
