Video cameras to enforce tolls on GSP starting Monday

EDISON - Video enforcement begins in the exact change lanes of the Garden State Parkway on Monday.

Video cameras will capture the license plate number of drivers who fail to pay a toll, and a notice will be sent for the cost of the toll plus a $50 administrative fee.

All toll lanes on the Parkway have been equipped with cameras for some time, but the software needed to catch cheats in the exact toll lanes didn't work until now. Lost revenues for violators are estimated at $4 million per year. Earlier this year, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority discontinued the envelope program put in place to pay missed tolls incurred in the exact change lanes because the agency says compliance was low.
