SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - One of the victims killed in a mass shooting in California has ties to New Jersey.

Nicholas Thalasinos was one of 14 people killed in San Bernardino, California Wednesday after a husband and wife shot up a social service center for the disabled.

Thalasinos was a health inspector who moved out of Cape May County 13 years ago. Family members say they were shocked to hear the news.

“I came home and saw [the attack] on the news,” says son Jacob. “I figured [my dad] must be fine. I love my father. I always will.”

According to reports, Thalasinos knew his alleged attacker and frequently debated with him on religion and politics; however the two were not enemies.

Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik are accused in the plot. They were killed after a shootout with police. Authorities say Farook may have been in contact with known extremists, but law enforcement officials are still looking into the motive for the attack.
