Vets from Passaic County blast cemetery's decision to remove flags

HAWTHORNE - The Riverside Veterans of Hawthorne are criticizing a Totowa cemetery for removing flags that they displayed to honor fellow soldiers for Memorial Day.The veterans say when they spoke to the workers at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, the workers said that their boss told them to remove the star-spangled banners.

Signs in the cemetery state "No flags before Memorial Day," but the veterans say they've been putting them up early for years and have never had a problem before.

The manager insists she did try to correct the situation and calls it a big misunderstanding. She says the flags are allowed.

A statement released by the Diocese of Paterson on the flag removal stated:

"The Holy Sepulchre cemetery policy is clearly posted and states that flags can be displayed on graves from Memorial Day to July 4th. Unfortunately, because of a miscommunication between that cemetery manager and the cemetery foreman some flags, which had been displayed on some graves the week prior to Memorial Day, were inadvertently removed. The cemetery office immediately contacted the American Legion Post in Totowa so they were aware of the problem and all flags have since been placed back on the graves."- Richard Sokerka, Communications Office Director
