BASKING RIDGE - Verizon Wireless has announced plans to roll out data plans with monthly usage caps starting tomorrow.

The wireless carrier says it's getting rid of its unlimited data plan for new smartphone customers, shifting instead to limited data plans that give users between 2 and 10 gigabytes of data each month.

Smartphone users will choose between paying $30 for 2 gigabytes, $50 for 5 gigabytes or $80 for 10 gigabytes of monthly data usage, a Verizon Wireless spokesperson said today. Customers who use more than their allotment will be charged $10 more for each additional gigabyte.

Verizon says 95 percent of its subscribers use less than 2 gigabytes per month.

Existing smartphone users will be able to keep their current unlimited plan, according to a Verizon spokesperson. The current unlimited data plan costs $30 per month.
