Vandals damage 9/11 memorial

BARNEGAT - A religious figurine in Ocean County dedicated to a fallen Sept. 11 responder has been damaged by vandals.

A bronze 2-foot statute of St. Michael the Archangel on the property of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on West Bay Avenue had its wings broken off as well as a rod ripped out of his hand.

Parishioners couldn't believe someone would desecrate a religious statue, let alone the patron saint of police officers dedicated to Harold Smith, known as "Smitty." The former NYPD sergeant died recently of kidney cancer. His doctors believe his illness was caused by toxic dust at Ground Zero.
