NEW BRUNSWICK - (AP) - Federal prosecutors are deciding whether to review a police shooting that left a man dead in central New Jersey.

A grand jury in Middlesex County last week declined to indict New Brunswick Police Officers Brad Berdel and Daniel Mazan in the 2011 shooting death of 46-year-old Barry Deloatch.

Prosecutors said Deloatch ran off after the officers approached him and two other men. The subsequent chase ended with Berdel shooting Deloatch.

Officials said Deloatch had threatened the officers with a board.

Deloatch's relatives disputed that account and want the officers charged.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office tells The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick that prosecutors will evaluate the facts to determine whether a federal probe in warranted.
