BELMAR - People along the Jersey Shore are dealing with flooding and power outages in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

Jersey Central Power & Light says 348,000 customers remain without power, as of Monday evening.

In Belmar, authorities were using a large pipe to drain water from the lake after flooding pushed water into the town's streets.

In neighboring Spring Lake, Irene destroyed nearly two miles of boardwalk.

Hundreds were evacuated along the Jersey Shore ahead of the destructive storm's path.

Belmar officials say crews will work around the clock to welcome summer's last weekend crowd. If Labor Day is lost, it could cost millions of dollars.

Hundreds of volunteers also converged on Belmar to pitch in help. They organized at the elementary school this afternoon with shovels and brooms to join in the cleanup.
