BELMAR - Many people headed to the Jersey Shore for the Labor Day weekend.
Despite hard rain overnight and early Monday morning, all indications are that this has been a pretty good summer for Jersey's beach resorts.
In Bradley Beach, overcast weather meant there was plenty of space for towels on the beach. Other families determined to savor summer's last hurrah found alternatives to the sand and surf.
David Levitt enjoyed mini golf with his grandkids. "Well, if you were desperate for a beach day, you could make it one," he says. "It's not raining, it's warm enough... Mini golf is much better right now."
People at Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach say this summer has been better than last year. Many are there to stay.
"I have been sitting on the same spot, on the same beach with the same people for 39 summers and I enjoy my summer family, that's what I call them," says Toby Wolf, a spokesperson for Jenkinson's.
A mom from Spring Lake Heights finished her back-to-school shopping in Sea Girt. "We're going to do a little shopping, a bike ride, then sit by the pool," says Bernadette Heine.
Businesses like Carducci's Pizzeria in Belmar hoping to end the season with a bang were disappointed. "I think it would have been a lot busier if it were clear and had been a good day," says Gary Samuelson.
While many are sad to see summer end, some year-round shore residents like Mindy Ryan, of Beach Haven are thrilled. "I'm kinda glad I live at the shore and it will be nice to have a nice quiet beach back," she says.
