LIVINGSTON - Tonight an eight-way surgical swap will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Chris Miele's wife wanted to give hers to him, but wasn't a match. The two then joined a donor exchange through St. Barnabas Medical Center. Dr. Shamkant Mulgaonkar explained to News 12 New Jersey, "It's called pair exchange because its pairs exchanging organs - not for any other benefit but to save your loved ones life."
Dr. Mulgaonkar and his staff organized what ended up being an eight-way transplant chain, one of the biggest swaps ever. The swap includes six married couples, a pair of friends and two strangers. All 16 surgeries were done in a three-day span around Valentine's Day. The participants and donors have never met, which is set to change tonight. St. Barnabas is introducing all eight couples tonight, giving them all a chance to give thanks in person.
