UNION CITY - Police say a New Jersey golfer is dead after attempting to retrieve a golf ball from a backyard adjacent to his country club.

Sung Paik, 60, was killed when a tree fell on him as he was trying to retrieve his ball. Police Capt. Michael LaViola tells The Record newspaper that Paik entered the yard where workers were removing a dead tree Sunday afternoon, and did not move quickly enough when the tree gave out. The workers attempted to get Paik to move.

Paik's golfing partner and a physician who was nearby performed CPR, but Paik was eventually pronounced dead at a hospital.

LaViola called the death accidental regardless of local ordinances barring homeowners from hiring workers for such endeavors on Sundays.
