CHATHAM - It's been a violent day in Ukraine's capital of Kiev, where protesters tossed firebombs at police and government snipers fired back.

At least 70 people were killed and hundreds were wounded.

The violence inflames a crisis that started in November, when Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych reversed a decision to sign a trade deal with the European Union and instead turned toward Russia.

"He created an illegitimate form of government, essentially a dictatorship," says Rutgers history and political science professor Dr. Taras Hunczak. "And now people are protesting that. They were not just protesting in the west or the east, it was all over Ukraine."

Ukraine's population has long been divided between historic loyalties to Europe and its eastern neighbor.
