NEW EGYPT - U.S. Senate hopefuls Steve Lonegan and Cory Booker are vigorously campaigning this weekend in the final days before Wednesday's special election.

Hundreds of supporters packed the New Egypt Speedway yesterday as former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin threw her support behind Republican candidate Lonegan. Elsewhere, Democratic candidate Booker met voters on his first day back on the campaign trail since his father died on Thursday.

The special election is to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died in June. Former Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa is the interim senator.

Six other names are on the ballot, representing different parties.
