U.S. Census: Coastal towns in NJ lost year-round residents

MANTOLOKING - Some Jersey Shore residents say they don't understand how census figures show a 30-percent dip in the Mantoloking population.

Census figures say that within the last decade, Mantoloking went from 500 full-time residents to 300. Cathy Bernard says she doesn't understand how this could be since every home is occupied.

Most of the homes in Mantoloking are summer homes for people who live full-time somewhere else, so those people are only counted by the census at their primary residence.

John Jewusiak, with Central Market in Bay Head, says the people who head south for the winter, known as "snowbirds," may have changed their residency.

While switching primary residence to Florida could have tax savings for homeowners, shrinking census populations here could reduce federal aid for Jersey Shore communities.
