NEWARK - New Jersey’s United States Attorney Paul Fishman is tendering his resignation following a request by the Trump administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked for the resignations of 46 U.S. attorneys who were appointed by the Obama administration. In a statement Friday, the Justice Department said the request was similar to ones made in past presidential transitions.

The department said many federal prosecutors appointed in the Obama administration have already left their positions, but that Sessions is now seeking the resignations of 46 holdovers.

“It has been the greatest professional experience that I can possibly imagine to have served in this office for the past 7 ½ years,” Fishman said in a statement. “Having spent so much of my career working to protect the interested of the people of New Jersey, I can think of no greater form of public service.”

Fishman announced that his resignation was effecting at 12 a.m. Saturday.
