Tubers retell harrowing moments on Mountain Creek water slide

VERNON - A Bergen County couple is still recovering after being stuck on a water slide earlier this week in Sussex County.

They were among the tubers trapped on the Gauley water slide at Mountain Creek. Officials at the park released a statement saying tubers backed up at the same place which caused problems. Christine Poggi and Liam Flately say a tear in the slide trapped them at the mouth of the water slide's tunnel with many others including children.

"Besides the enclosed claustrophobic conditions we were in, it was this incessant water careening down on us," said Poggi. "Just gallons and gallons."

Flatley and Poggi say water flow never stopped and people were still coming down the ride even as they tried to help those in trouble.

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs says that officials inspected the ride. It says a report on the accident or the condition of the ride will not be ready until next week.

Officials at the park did say in a statement that they took the incident seriously and are focused on providing a safe, fun and unique experience.
