EDISON - President-elect Donald Trump has hired a former political advisor to Gov. Chris Christie who the governor cut ties with two years ago in the fallout from the Bridge-Gate scandal.

Bill Stepien was named to the position of deputy assistant to the president and political director Wednesday by Trump.

Stepien was not charged in connection with the scandal. But witness David Wildstein, who pleaded guilty in the crime, testified that Stepien knew about the plan to punish Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, who didn’t endorse Christie’s 2013 re-election campaign.

Stepien's attorney has said his client had no role in the scheme.

Wildstein also testified that Stepien knew about plans to use the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for political favors to gain endorsements from Democrats.

Two former Christie allies were convicted in November and are to be sentenced next month.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
