JERSEY CITY - Three Pennsylvania residents accused of trying to bring a stockpile of weapons through the Holland Tunnel were in court Thursday trying to get the case thrown out.

John Cramsey, Dean Smith and Kimberly Arendt say that they were headed into New York to rescue a teenage heroin user who may have been in danger. They were pulled over just outside the Holland Tunnel, and authorities allegedly found several guns and tactical gear inside the truck they were traveling in.

The trio appeared in court Thursday to argue that they were unlawfully stopped. The officer who pulled them over testified that the truck was stopped for a cracked windshield and for items dangling from the rearview mirror.

But defense attorney James Lisa argues that the truck was profiled because it featured a large decal of the logo of Cramsey’s gun business.

"I say it's an illegal search because that officer did not stop that vehicle because of a crack in the windshield,” Lisa says. “He stopped it because of the signs, because of what the vehicle looked like. It said ‘shooting range’ on the vehicle. He knew what he was looking for. He went there specifically for that."

A judge will decide on the case by mid-February. The trio has pleaded not guilty to more than 60 counts.
