THE BRONX - Some tenants at a Bronx apartment building say they have been without gas for more than a week.

The tenants called the meeting to demand an update from NYCHA on the problem.  Dozens met with the building management and the city's Housing Authority to demand answers on a solution.

The president of the tenants association tells News 12 that NYCHA informed him the problem could not be fixed for a minimum of 30 days. He says the only thing the city's Housing Authority has provided are hot plates, which tenants say are insufficient when trying to feed a family.

In response, NYCHA says it will also provide vouchers to people who earn less than a specific income to apply toward meals at restaurants.

The building management says the problem arose when a gas riser was damaged.

Officials say Con Edison shut down the gas in the building for the safety of the tenants. Officials say a contractor has started looking at the building, but he has to obtain a permit from the Department of Buildings before he can begin work.

NYCHA does not have an exact timeline to when the problem will be fixed. It did say that it will be hosting weekly meetings and sending out newsletters to keep tenants updated. The repairs are expected to take a long time because NYCHA says all of the building's original piping needs to be replaced.
