TRENTON - The City of Trenton was almost without a Christmas tree this year after someone forgot to request a donation from local tree farm.

Mayor Tony Mack and the city council have decided to take $450 from federal grant money to pay for a tree. The money was supposed to be used for community development.

While spending the grand money is not illegal, several residents in Trenton believe the city should have found another way to pay for it.

Trenton resident Kevin Moriarty and several others decided to donate some of their own money to pay back the grant.

"It's a nice symbol of what the city could be…to turn into something so messed up, that was just sad to me," Moriarty said.

According to the city clerk's office, as of Wednesday afternoon, they have collected donations to pay back about half of what the tree is worth.
