TRENTON - Now that state police troopers are on the way to help authorities in Camden patrol high-crime areas, some Trenton residents would like to see the same thing happen in the Capital.

State Sen. Shirley Turner (D-N.J.) has represented Trenton in the Legislature for almost two decades and is in favor of the idea.

"If the governor would allow the state troopers to come in and augment the police force that currently exists, it would be a short-term measure, but I think right now we need everything we possibly can," she says.

Earlier this year, budget cuts forced Trenton to lay off 80 police officers. Neither Gov. Chris Christie's (R-N.J.) office nor Trenton Mayor Tony Mack's office would respond to News 12 New Jersey's requests for comment.
