TRENTON - Authorities say a Trenton police officer accidentally shot another officer in the foot when a man ran out of an apartment and assaulted them.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office says Trenton officers Michael Tradigo and Luis Cruz had gone to a city apartment early Monday to investigate a reported burglary in progress.

Authorities say a witness reported seeing an armed man enter the apartment. However, the man soon ran out and assaulted the officers as they tried to enter the apartment.

Prosecutors say Cruz was treated at a hospital for his wound and has been released. Further details on his condition were not disclosed.

The suspect, identified only as a 30-year-old Hamilton man, is charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and burglary.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
