LONG BEACH ISLAND - Trash has washed ashore along the entire stretch of Long Beach Island. Tim Hiferty, the health director on Long Beach Island, says trash and decomposing material likely came in yesterday from the Barnegat Bay.

One person reported finding a syringe mixed in with the debris in Brant Beach. He says he just picked it up and threw it out. If any other needles are found, health officials are urging people to leave them alone and report the discovery to police. Last summer, three people were pricked by syringes in Long Beach Island and were prescribed antibiotics as a precaution.
