Traffic holds start on Goethals Bridge

ELIZABETH - Officials have started traffic holds on the Goethals Bridge so they can move concrete girders across the span that links Elizabeth with Staten Island.

Beginning Wednesday and lasting about a year, traffic headed for the Goethals Bridge will be stopped in both directions between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. approximately three days per week.

The Bayonne Bridge will open at 4:30 a.m. on those days to offer motorists an alternate route. They can also use the Outerbridge Crossing.

The girders are part of a replacement project.
