TOMS RIVER - A Toms River K-9 officer has died, the department announced Thursday.

Officer Thunder was partnered with Toms River police Sgt. James Reilly. The dog died of natural causes. He was a K-9 officer for about 10 years before retiring in 2013.

K-9 Thunder was trained for police patrols and narcotics detection. He was involved in many police calls, including searching for suspects and looking for missing persons.

“He had a unique personality that allowed him to complete all of his duties, while always wanting to be praised,” Toms River police spokesman Ralph Stocco said in a statement.

One of the highlights of K-9 Thunder’s career was a narcotics search that led to a number of arrests and took a large quantity of cocaine off the streets.
