TOMS RIVER - Fire departments across the state are reminding residents to clear snow around fire hydrants to make them easier to find in an emergency.

Toms River Fire Prevention Director James Mercready says it's the neighborly thing to do. "It will slow down the firefighters if they have to shovel out the hydrant in order to connect to the hydrant," he says. "If residents could take their own initiative and go out there and adopt a hydrant for us, that would be greatly appreciated."

Mercready suggests catching a neighbor when they're out clearing their walkways, and asking him or her to help you.
