EDISON - When re-gifting just isn't an option, there are several ways to make the holiday gift return process as painless as possible.

According to Consumer Reports, shoppers should take advantage of digital receipts as an easier alternative to keeping track of traditional paper ones.

It's also advisable to look for stores with extended holiday returns. Amazon, for example, gives shoppers until the end of January to return items purchased after Nov. 1.

Gift cards may make a quick and convenient gift, but generally are not returnable. Gifts purchased at outlet stores generally can't be returned either.
