MANHATTAN - New Jersey commuters were on high alert today after two men were arrested and charged in connection with a terror plot against a Canadian passenger train bound for New York City.
Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and 35-year-old Raed Jaser are accused of trying to carry out an al-Qaida-backed attack.
Although Canadian law enforcement says there was no imminent threat of attack, they believe those involved were receiving some sort of support from al-Qaida in the Middle East.
"The individuals were receiving support from al-Qaida elements located in Iran. Now, I can tell you that there is no information to indicate that these attacks were state sponsored," Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said.
Iran has completely denied al-Qaida is operating inside its borders.
