NEW PROVIDENCE - Thousands of people took part in the New Jersey Sharing Network’s fourth annual 5K run and walk Sunday morning.

About 1,500 participants ran the course in New Providence, while another 9,000 walked, jogged or strolled with their kids.

The special event brings together organ and tissue donors, as well as transplant recipients.

Money raised from the event will benefit the network, a nonprofit organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for New Jersey residents awaiting a transplant.

The organization says that 519 organ transplants occurred last year in New Jersey, but 5,000 state residents remain on the waiting list.

The New Jersey Sharing Network has already raised $700,000 as part of its fundraising effort. The charity says its goal is to hit $1 million.
