NEWARK - Thursday night's winter storm was no deterrent for the brazen thieves who rammed a truck into an electronics store on a busy street in Newark.

The bandits can be seen on surveillance video repeatedly driving a truck through a metal gate on the front of Electromania on Broad Street at around 4:45 a.m. Friday. Once gaining entry into the showroom, as many as four theives grabbed televisions, computers and phones, according to owner Mohammed Mellouk.

It took only six minutes for the thieves to get away with as much as $35,000 in merchandise, Mellouk says. Once he arrived at the store, he says he then had to fight people coming in off the street trying to take things from the store.

Mellouk says this is the second time his store has been hit during a snowstorm, and he believes the lack of activity on the streets makes for a faster getaway.

The robbery is almost identical to one just two days ago at a jewelry store in Union, during which thieves backed a truck into the store trying to steal a safe, but left with nothing.

Owners boarded up the store Friday to prevent further looting attempts.
