Tent city in Lakewood to be torn down

LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP - Officials in Lakewood Township have ordered that numerous makeshift homes housing homeless people be torn down in the woods off Cedar Bridge Avenue.

The township says that there was an agreement made last year with the tent city organizers that there would be no further construction of permanent structures, but they say 15 new structures have been built.

Officials say that the tent city is a fire hazard and they do not want to be held liable if someone were to be injured.

Residents in the tent city are worried they'll have nowhere to go if their homes are destroyed.

Ocean County currently has no official homeless shelters.
