Swimmer stung by stingray at Jersey Shore

A 22-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after officials say he was stung by a stingray while swimming in the ocean at Island Beach

BARNEGAT - A 22-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after officials say he was stung by a stingray while swimming in the ocean at Island Beach State Park near Barnegat Inlet.

Authorities say stingrays have forced swimmers out of the water in Ocean County several times this week. The rays were spotted multiple times, including twice in Seaside.

Stingrays can be anywhere from 8 to 10 feet long and travel in small groups. Marine experts say they are perfectly normal this time of year at the Jersey Shore. They tend to stay on the bottom of the ocean floor, but come in closer to shore when the water gets warm.

The stings cause severe pain, swelling and sometimes bleeding. The wound is usually soaked in hot water and topical antibiotics are applied to reduce the chances of infection. Those that are stung should seek immediate medical attention.
