TOMS RIVER - Animal officials are caring for a swan that was found shot in the wing by a tranquillizer dart.

Staffers at the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Lacey tell News 12 New Jersey that a good Samaritan found the swan in Toms River and rushed it over to Popcorn Park.

A veterinarian was able to remove the dart and the swan was given antibiotics. It is expected to be OK.

Officials at the refuge say that the swan was shot with a tranquillizer dart normally used on larger animals like deer. The official said that if the dart struck a different part of the swan, it could have drowned in the water after it became sedated.

Anyone who might have any information about who shot the swan is asked to contact the Associated Humane Society at 609-693-1900 or email njhumane@aol.com.
