NEW BRUNSWICK - The former Rutgers University student accused of using a webcam to spy on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man has rejected a plea deal.

The state offered Dharun Ravi a plea bargain that included no jail time and would protect him from deportation. Ravi is legally in the U.S., but not a citizen. The latest offer from the state included 600 hours of community service and some counseling.

Had Ravi accepted, he would have had to admit to charges of invading Tyler Clementi's privacy and bias intimidation. That was not acceptable, according to his attorney.

The alleged incident happened in Sept. 2010, just days before police say Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge.

Pre-jury selection will begin on Feb. 17, with the trial officially starting on Feb. 21.
