Suspect in Clifton rape of 12-year-old surrenders

CLIFTON - Authorities in Clifton say a man wanted in the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl has been placed into custody after he fled the United States.

Authorities say Leonardo Quintero, 20, of Paterson, fled to Peru last week. Quintero was taken into custody this morning at Newark Liberty International Airport. Police say he decided to surrender after his family convinced him to return from Lima.

Authorities say Quintero coaxed the girl to leave her home through an instant message on the Internet.

Cops say the girl was taken to the Clifton home of another suspect, 19-year-old Canpolat Cankurt, where she was allegedly raped. Authorities say the assault was captured on video.

Cankurt is being held at the Passaic County Jail on $500,000 bail.
