PARAMUS - The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says it has filed attempted murder charges against a Westwood man who shot and critically wounded a Paramus police officer Sunday night.
Officer Rachel Morgan was wearing her bulletproof vest. The two-year veteran of the force is 31 years old. She is hospitalized in critical but stable condition at Hackensack University Medical Center. Sources tell News 12 New Jersey she is expected to survive.
The prosecutor said the officer was shot at about 11 p.m. Sunday in an exchange of gunfire with 23-year-old Michael Carmody. The shooting happened at an entrance ramp to the Garden State Parkway in Paramus. Morgan was trying to stop the suspect's car, and he spun out on the ramp.
Another officer arrived and also exchanged fire with the Carmody, hitting him several times. Carmody also is in critical condition. He is hospitalized under police guard.
