FAIRVIEW - Authorities conducted surprise inspections of jitney buses in Fairview today.

Police stopped buses and checked for things like tire pressure, working lights and other possibly hazardous conditions.

The courtesy inspections are aimed at interacting with drivers and stressing the importance of safety. They were a joint effort between the Bergen County and Fairview police departments.

Authorities say last month’s tragic bus crash in West New York that killed an 8-month-old girl has highlighted the importance of the safety checks.
