SURF CITY - As the Jersey Shore prepares for Memorial Day weekend, one community is hit with a major blow.

The shrinking beach in Surf City, which has been eaten away during storms, was supposed to be replenished ahead of the summer crowd, but the project has been delayed, forcing the closure of some sections during peak vacation season.

Okie Whitcraft, who owns a butcher shop on the north end of Surf City, says it's a major setback for a community still trying to recover after its beaches were closed a few years ago.

The initial project four years ago cost taxpayers $6 million. The Army Corps of Engineers says beaches will be closed in two-block sections at a time, for safety.
