EDISON - A new study says there is no link between autism and the MMR vaccine.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at more than 95,000 children. Many of them were at a higher risk of having autism because their older siblings were on the autism spectrum. The study looked to see if there was a link between getting vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella.

Peter Wenger, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. Peters University Hospital, encourages parents to vaccinate their kids. He says the MMR vaccine is extremely effective against measles.

He and other medical professionals hope the study will put some parental fears at ease. He also hopes research can become more focused on finding the true causes of autism and how to treat it.

The full study can be found on the Journal of the American Medical Association’s website.
