PARAMUS - Students and teachers across the state celebrated a love of reading Monday, on a day President Barack Obama has proclaimed Read Across America Day.

Many towns did their part to honor the legacy of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to us as Dr. Seuss.

Educators, librarians and public officials took part in programs reading to children in Paramus. Teachers and principals went the extra mile, some dressing to impress upon students the importance of reading.

"Kids get into it because they come to school and are greeted by adults in funny costumes, waving to them with books in their hands," says Laverne O'Boyle, principal at Memorial Elementary. "We have parents who volunteer all day long to come and read to students."

In Jersey City, eighth-graders celebrated Dr. Seuss by reading to younger students at Alfred E. Zampella Elementary. Educators went one step further, organizing a book giveaway to each of the school's 1,100 students.

They say while parents and other volunteers got involved, teachers go all out to make it a special day for students. "The teachers really enjoy this time of year because it's a time to just celebrate reading," says reading specialist Kathleen Renz. "So they made hats, they decorated bulletin boards. Some people decorated doors and basically just read Dr. Seuss books and other books today."

Educators say the main goal of the Read Across America program is to get children to love reading.

This is the 17th year that Read Across America has encouraged schools to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
