Students return to school after classmate killed over break

LITTLE EGG HARBOR - An Easter break tragedy will mean an emotional return to the classroom for students in Little Egg Harbor.

Ocean County authorities say 13-year-old Emilee Laferriere was walking with a friend when she was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver on the shoulder of Radio Road at around 10 p.m. on Easter Sunday. Counselors are available to talk to students today at the Pinelands Regional Junior High School. Friends and family set up a roadside memorial near the scene of the incident yesterday to remember the seventh-grader.

Investigators issued a summons for drunken driving to 47-year-old Timothy Hettinger following the incident. Blood tests will determine whether the Little Egg Harbor man was over the legal limit.
