NEWARK - Deplorable and unsafe conditions have led students to walk out of Barringer High School in Newark.

Students protested yesterday not only because they say the school is unsanitary, but because it is unsafe. Authorities say a 15-year-old student was sexually assaulted inside a classroom two weeks ago. Among the many complaints, students have reported problems ranging from rats, mice, cockroaches and spiders, to guns and hallway fights.

"It's like a jungle," senior Ashley Martinez said in the Star-Ledger. "The school's out of control and I don't feel safe."

A spokeswoman for Newark schools said the district has encountered insect and rodent problems over the years, but the system's facilities team regularly exterminates and conducts daily and weekly cleanings.
