NEWARK - A shooting at a fraternity house near the New Jersey Institute of Technology has left one person dead.

The shooting happened at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house on the 300 block of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Newark before 3:30 a.m. Monday.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says Joseph Micalizzi, 23, of Freehold, was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later at University Hospital.

No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified, according to the prosecutor’s office. Police are looking into whether or not robbery was a motive for the shooting.

There is a $20,000 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of the individual or individuals who shot and killed the student.

This is the second murder of a college student in Newark in the past three weeks. A student at Rutgers-Newark was shot and killed inside his apartment on April 10.

Counseling will be made available to all NJIT students, faculty and staff.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line at 1-877-847-7432.
