ELMWOOD PARK - A severe storm left a trail of damage and caused significant power outages in Elmwood Park Monday afternoon, and closed schools for Tuesday.

Residents on 53rd Street were without power after the storm. The Elmwood Park School District was also in the dark and made the decision to cancel class for today. Apparently, the word didn't reach everyone. Some parents and students arrived at Elmwood Park High School, only to find the doors locked.

A house at 119 18th Ave. also suffered significant damage. Lou Vuoncino says he was inside when the top of an 80-foot tree came crashing down on his house. In addition to a broken fence, Vuoncino found four holes punched into the roof.

"Felt like the top of the house was going to come off,” Vuoncino says. "I heard an explosion, which turned out to be the tree, fracturing and hitting the top of the house."

The homeowner says the damage could have been much worse with the strength of the wind that whipped through the community.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the storm.
