Stolen SUV crashed into Word Power Foundation Ministry Pentecostal Church, causes major damage

A church in Newark is picking up the pieces after thieves in a stolen car crashed right into it. (6/12/14)

NEWARK - A church in Newark is picking up the pieces after thieves in a stolen car crashed right into it.

The SUV crashed into the Word Power Foundation Ministry Pentecostal Church on Beecher Street Thursday morning, knocking out a good chunk of the front wall.

Witnesses say several young people jumped out and fled on foot after it happened.

No one was inside the church at the time, but about 40 congregants will have to worship elsewhere while the church is rebuilt.

"That will be our ultimate goal, to rebuild and come back," says church deacon Charles Steiner. "We don't have anywhere else to worship - so we'll try to fix it."

No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.

Police have not said when or from where the car was stolen.
