WOODBRIDGE - Authorities say that toll collectors stole thousands of dollars before police stepped in. Motorists that News 12 New Jersey spoke with say they were surprised to hear that an elaborate scam was taking place right under their noses.

The New Jersey State Police wouldn't give details as to how they caught the alleged thieves, but News 12 New Jersey found out that the cash lanes between exits 3 and 5 in southern New Jersey is where toll collectors are accused of accepting fares and tickets for long trips, throwing away the original tickets and replacing them with ones claiming that drivers had gone on a shorter, cheaper drive.

Authorities say drivers would put a $1 toll in the register and then pocket the difference. Drivers were not overcharged, but authorities say that the toll collectors were able to pocket about $10,000 before an audit revealed the bogus numbers.
