NORTH BERGEN - Preschool students in Hudson County are getting a hands-on lesson in keeping themselves healthy with a new vegetable garden.

Home Depot donated the supplies and the crew to build the garden at the Step Ahead Preschool in North Bergen.

The kids helped to plant seeds, which they will be in charge of growing and eventually cooking and eating.

"This is an urban area, so children don't really get to see this," says Step Ahead Preschool owner Tery Velarde. "So to watch it from beginning to end, is really fabulous for them."

The garden is part of a summerlong farm-to-table program that will incorporate a handful of different subjects into the gardening lesson.

School administrators say they were inspired by Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" program.
